The Top Ten Posts for 2006

I’ve managed to dig out the ten most popular posts, by number of visits, at Ian’s Messy Desk in 2006. (If anyone knows how to automate the process, please let me know.)

I find it interesting that five of the top ten posts are topical to Christmas. My blog traffic starts to build around mid to end of November and steadily increases, peaking on Christmas Eve and tapering back to average by the end of December. I don’t imagine you could make a go of a Christmas-only niche blog, but one that focussed on holiday celebrations year-round might just be successful.

Here are the top-ten in no particular order:

  1. Desktop Blogging Clients: My overview of several desktop blogging clients was by far and away the most visited post of 2006. Visitors came daily via search engine links or from the link back at Problogger.net. Thanks Darren.
  2. Joyful, joyful, we adore thee: The lyrics to the Henry van Dyke hymn are a regular source of traffic. I wonder what the most searched hymn lyrics are on the Internet?
  3. del.icio.us links from May 4, 06: For a while, I was having my daily del.icio.us bookmarks posted. Something or things in this list of links drew steady traffic.
  4. No More Radio Shack in Canada: Who know why, but this news story from April 2005 continued to get attention through 2006.
  5. 8 Tips to Help You Clean Off Your Desk: One messy-desk story made the top ten on Ian’s Messy Desk.
  6. Christmas Songs (words and guitar chords): there must be a lot of guitar playing over Christmas. This and the next two related posts represents about 50% of my November and December blog traffic.
  7. Christmas Carols and Songs with Guitar Chords:
  8. Christmas Carols and Songs with Guitar Chords: Same title as number 7, different post.
  9. Track Santa with NORAD: Come Christmas Eve, this post is drawing about 75% of the day’s traffic.
  10. 5 Simple Post-Holiday Organising Tips: Some head-start tips to get you planning for next Christmas.

There’s nothing in this disparate list of posts to indicate any trends for the future. Still, it’s good to see the things that are catching the attention of web surfers.
