Canadian Tire Guy Dumped

Last October I pointed to this article from Macleans’ magazine that stuck it to the Canadian Tire know-it-all that we love to hate. Since the article was published, he has been conspicuous by his absence from Canadian Tire commercials.

It’s official, he will no longer be aggravating the television audience. Canadian Tire has dumped know-it-all neighbour ads.

“He was the country's least favourite neighbour, but Canadians won't have to see him anymore. Canadian Tire has dumped the smug star of their TV commercials and his perky wife.”

New Honda Commercial with the Honda Choir

Back in November I posted links to an innovative commercial Honda U.K. made in 2003. In it, we see parts of a Honda Accord interacting in a Rube Goldberg-esque fashion.

Honda U.K. has done it again, with a brilliant commercial for the Honda Civic. (Once the flash intro has completed, click “Watch” or “Watch Civic” to launch.) As a choir member and sometimes director, this thing fascinates me. I’ve watched it about 10 times already today. There are also three short clips of the rehearsals and making of the commercial.

Honda Commercial

I linked to this ad somewhere in my blogging past, but it seems to be one of the victims of my blog “tweaking”. Cog Movie (click to view) cog.mpg (download 2.63 MB)

The story that went around the Internet in 2003:

New Honda commercial in the UK. Very important that you understand: There are no computer graphics or digital tricks in the film. Everything you see really happened in real time exactly as you see it.

The film took 606 takes. On the first 605 takes, something, usually very minor, didn't work. They would then have to set the whole thing up again.

The crew spent weeks shooting night and day. The film cost six million dollars and took three months to complete including a full engineering of the sequence. Cog

In addition, it's two minutes long so every time Honda airs the film on British television, they're shelling out enough dough to keep any one of us in clover for a lifetime. Honda executives figure the ad will soon pay for itself simply in "free" viewings (Honda isn't paying a dime to have you watch this commercial!).

When the ad was pitched to senior executives, they signed off on it immediately without any hesitation — including the costs.

There are six and only six hand-made Accords in the world. To the horror of Honda engineers, the filmmakers disassembled two of them to make the film.

Everything you see in the film (aside from the walls, floor, ramp, and complete Honda Accord) are parts from those two cars.

When the ad was shown to Honda executives, they liked it and commented on how amazing computer graphics have gotten. They fell off their chairs when they found out it was for real.
