It has been many years since I was in high school and there has been much that was covered in class that I have forgotten. The one subject that has stuck with me all these years is public speaking.
Public speaking was a regular part of the English curriculum. In each grade, every student was expected to give at least one speech to the class over the course of the year. In addition, the school held an annual public speaking competition. The lessons learned there, and built upon over time, have proved to be the most useful of my school days.
Any business or entrepreneurial personal development is going to require public speaking skills at some point. It could be giving a project update at a staff meeting, selling your product to investors, or speaking to the board of directors. The more comfortable your are with your speaking ability, the more success you will have.
Over the next few Tuesdays, I am going to post a series on improving your public speaking skills. I will cover the following six topics:
- Analysing your audience
- Preparing your speech
- Delivering the speech
- Building credibility as you speak
- Interacting with your audience and handling questions
- Feedback and follow-up
If you have any suggestions or questions to help shape the posts, leave them in the comment section below.
