Give a Goat for Christmas
The holiday season can be a time for giving beyond the boundaries of our day-to-day existence. We don’t have to limit our gift giving to family and friends. We can make a difference in the lives of the most vulnerable people, all over the world. We can make the gift directly or on behalf of someone else. There are numerous agencies and organizations that handle this type of charitable giving. This list is not exhaustive, but highlights what can be done at this time of year.
The Salvation Army, United Kingdom with the Republic of Ireland: gift catalogue – We know you put a lot of thought into the gifts that you give. You want to choose a gift that is just right for the person you’re giving it to. We do too. That’s why we think that giving gifts that give again are the best presents you can give to your friends and family.
The Salvation Army, Canada and Bermuda Territory: Hope for the World – The money raised will finance a host of programs that range from disaster services and education, to healthcare and development projects, such as micro-credit loans, goat-rearing programs, and clean water supplies.
World Vision, Canada’s Most Meaningful Gifts – The World Vision Gift Catalogue makes any occasion grand. Commemorate friends, family and workmates with an exciting, significant gift, and know the pleasure of improving the lives of those in need.
Oxfam Unwrapped – Canada – For example, when you buy a goat, chicken or donkey you are supporting Oxfam’s livelihoods programs. You are potentially buying one of those animals and it will be purchased in the region where it is needed. Your donation will also provide vaccinations, health and market awareness training and much more. More importantly, the income your gift generates will create greater self-sufficiency, self-esteem and educational opportunities. If you purchase a radio, hygiene kit, household kit, survival kit, Oxfam bucket, bicycle, training for disaster preparedness, public health promotion or training on gender-based violence in emergencies; you will be supporting our emergency response, reconstruction and disaster preparedness programs. This will ensure we can act quickly when disasters happen and will be helping women and men rebuild their lives.
Samaritan’s Purse Canada | Operation Christmas Child – Getting involved with Operation Christmas Child is as simple as packing a shoe box with small gifts, but the impact is enormous. Your gift of toys, school supplies, and hygiene items will bring hope to children, their families, and communities.
These are just a few of the International organizations involved in this type of work. Take a look around your community. There is likely a local agency that would benefit from this type of giving.

Here in the Uk there has been a furore about donating goats – the Africans DON’T want them! They eat anything and this has caused a lot of deforestation and thus dwindling crops etc in sub Saharan Africa. We have been advised NOT to donate goats – the cows and sheep die before goats do but goats cause far more problems than they are meant to resolve.
