Five Tips for Great Speeches

Posted in Communication Tuesday

  1. Organize a simple outline – Some variation on the following three points will always form a coherent presentation:
    1. This is where I was.
    2. This is where I am now.
    3. This is how I got from there to here.
  2. Build your content – Fill in the outline. Don’t worry about the structure of the content to start. Just grab all the ideas that come to your mind. Once you have the material, organize it into the outline.
  3. Grab audience attention – Start with a bold statement or tell a compelling story.
  4. Make sure it’s worth saying – Record your speech and play it back. After each key point, ask yourself, “does anybody care?” If the answer is “no”, change what you will say.
  5. Lighten up… if you can – Humour can go a long way to keeping the listener’s attention. However, if you can’t tell a joke or aren’t particularly funny, skip it. Humour that is badly used will quickly turn off listeners. Perhaps you’re more comfortable with inspiration quotes or stories; use those instead.
