Dig A Hole Through The Center Of The Earth

There’s a philosophical question that fosters considerable discussion among 10 year olds:

If you were to dig a hole from where you are standing all the way through the center of the Earth, where would you end up?

DigHoles.com aims to answer that question.

Using Google maps, DigHoles.com takes a starting point —say Edmonton, Alberta— and shows where you would end up if you dug a hole through the centre of the Earth.

Caution to Edmontonians: do not try this at home, unless you’re a very good swimmer. The exit hole is in the Southern Ocean, somewhere off the barren Heard and McDonald Islands. There’s also the risk that water from the Southern Ocean would pour through and flood Edmonton.

Link from BNUG who thinks this might be a practical method for twinning cities around the world. (Unless of course, you live in Edmonton.)

    Ha! Great minds think alike!

The Heard and McDonald Islands may be uninhabited but, wouldn’t you know it, in this digital age, they sure as heck have their own top level internet domain![1]

P.S. Such was the lure of young woman called Mouse, I used to spend hours on buses to and from (the other) Edmonton[2] as a teenager.
