Communication Resolutions for 2009
It’s the end of 2008 and it’s time to think about the kinds of accomplishments you’d like to make in 2009. Some of us make resolutions and forget them by the end of January and some don’t bother making resolution, because they know they won’t keep them.
Here are some things you can reslove to do to improve the way you communicate with others. These are simple changes and should be easy to keep forever.
- Listen more – The most difficult communication skill is listening. We’re generally anxious to be heard and less focussed on what others are saying. However, if we’re to be effective in the way we communicate with others, we have to focus at least as much attention to our listening skills.
- Speak simply – Try to say what you mean. Don’t waste words. Say only as much as is needed to get your message across. You don’t have to say the same thing three different ways.
- Encourage others – One of the most effective uses of communication skills is encouraging others. Resolve to communicate in ways that build-up others.
- Learn and remember names – We are sensitive about our names. Everybody wants to be seen as an individual, to feel special and respected. When you use a person’s preferred name, you honour them and show respect. You see them as individuals and it’s a good foundation for a relationship.
- Hold fewer but more effective meetings – Peter Drucker said, “Meetings are a symptom of bad organization. The fewer meetings the better.” Many would think the concept of a useful or productive meeting to be something of an oxymoron. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible for an organization to function without having meetings. The trick is to make the most of meeting time.
- Cultivate relationships – A strong, healthy relationship does not magically happen. Good relationships are built, one step at a time.
