A Template for an Acceptance Speech
Possibly one of the most familiar types of speech is the acceptance speech. We can watch any number of awards shows on television a listen to celebrities thank everyone from their parents to scriptwriter to who-knows-who. At least, that’s how the stereotype goes. The speeches on these shows range from great to really bad.
You may not be called on to accept an Oscar, but you may be recognized for some local accomplishment. No one expects you have an acceptance speech in your back pocket, but if you ever have to respond to the presentation of a gift, here’s a simple outline to use.
- Express your appreciation in direct language. Pause for a moment to collect you thoughts. Be sincere and to the point. One or two sentences is enough.
- Don’t mention or apologize for being unprepared. No one expects you to be prepared. Be yourself. Be thankful for the honour.
- Thank the group presenting the award. Focus on the point of the award. Is it for community work or something you accomplished at work? Tell how the award will affect your life. If there’s a cash gift attached, how will you use it?
- Open the gift. The audience may be waiting to see what you received. If they know what it is, they may be waiting to see your reaction. Be gracious in your response to the gift. Respect the efforts of thos honouring you.
- Say thank you again. Close with a simple reiteration of you thanks.
