9 Key Steps for Preparing a Speech

Posted in Communication

The Americans are into a Presidential election year. From now until November, every time you turn on the television, you’ll catch a candidate—at some level of government—making their pitch. There will likely be more speeches than you care to hear.

Locally, we’re expecting a Provincial election call today or tomorrow. Fortunately, we’ll have to endure no more than four weeks of electioneering and speech making.

As I’ve mentioned before, there’s nothing quite like having to give a speech to increase gut-level fear. A critical part of overcoming the fear is adequate preparation. The more preparation and practice you have, the more comfort you will feel giving the speech.

Over the next couple of months, I’m going to cover a series of key steps for preparing a speech.

  1. Select your topic.
  2. Determine your exact purpose.
  3. Identify your speech objective.
  4. Analyze your audience.
  5. Plan and organize your main ideas.
  6. Organize your introduction and conclusion.
  7. Prepare an outline.
  8. Prepare effective visual aids.
  9. Practice your speech.

Hey, I’ve been getting into oratory lately and have read many of the most famous ones in history. I like what you’re doing teaching people how to prepare a speech. Very useful. I used to participate in speech tournaments, not delivering speeches but other stuff. It’s only a couple months ago that I really go into actual rhetoric and I believe that it’s a very important medium of communication. I started a blog recently, keyspeeches.blogspot.com, that you or your readers might find interesting. I’ve started compiling an archive of many of the famous speeches of the world. Please check it out =) As I said, I only started it recently so it needs help. I only have a couple speeches right now but I add a new one every day. I would add more but I need to gather more speeches to add. Anyways, I really would appreciate any advice or ideas you have to offer!
