Last week Unclutterer posted a Leo Babauta column, Creating a minimalist workspace. I have posted similar tips in the past.
While Leo talks about his minimalist workspace, he also mentions that he works from home. I would imagine that his sparse work set-up is balanced by home decor, just steps from his work station.
I think people look for the personal touch in the corporate setting. The lone computer on the desk and the bare walls tend to remind people of day one on a new job. You’re given a barren office, accentuating the fact you’re the new guy.
A little of the personal touch can make your office or cubicle more hospitable. This then can become a more productive environment. However, you don’t want to over do it. You could end up at the other end of the personalized-workspace spectrum. Check out Lifehacker’s Coolest Cubicle Contest.
Some things you can easily do to add a personal stamp to your workspace:
- A couple of small family photos, but avoid a wall of pictures devoted to all your relatives.
- Some artwork, perhaps even something special a child has made. Avoid putting up every picture your kids have ever drawn.
- A custom chair, though company policy might limit selection.
- A scented/aromatherapy candle or air freshener, but be sensitive to your neighbours’ noses.
- A motivational quote or personal mission statement posted on your bulletin board.
- Personalized mouse pads, wallpaper and screen savers can dress up your computer. Watch out for inappropriate content.
- A fruit bowl or candy dish not only dresses up your office, but makes you popular with co-workers.
- A plant or fresh cut flowers, but throw them in the bin if and when they die.

i think having a personalized space makes you feel better about where you are, thus adding to your level of productivity, it’s a great idea.
Anything that would help. I couldn’t imagine a sterile cubicle with nothing but a computer. The cool cubicle contest, OTOH… some have way too much time on their hands.

This article makes me sad. When you start thinking about how to personalize your cubicle, “if the company policy” allows you- it is time to seriously review your commitment to working for a corporation, and perhaps consider some self-employment options.
