GoalsThere is a lot of sense to the question, “If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know that you’ve arrived?” You wouldn’t think of taking a trip, without deciding on a destination and the route to get there. Yet, that’s how many of us live our lives. We drift along, hoping to reach somewhere, but frustrated and stressed by the lack of progress.

If you want to accomplish things in life, you have to have an end in mind. Here are 6 tips to help set effective goals:

  1. Put your goals in writing. You daydream about things you would like to accomplish, but to achieve those dreams, you have to commit your goals to paper. Once it’s on paper, you see where you want to go. Writing down goals is always the first step toward achieving them.
  2. Set specific goals. Which is better: “I want to lose some weight,” or “I want to lose 20 pounds by the end of January?” The second gives your a specific and measurable target. Express your goals in clear, measurable ways.
  3. Set attainable goals. Goals should stretch you to challenge your skills and abilities, but not be so high they discourage your effort and performance. As your success and confidence grows, you can reach for higher goals.
  4. Make your goals manageable. Break it down into small steps. If your goal is to lose 16 pounds within four months, divide it into steps of one pound per week. It is easier to manage and easier to achieve.
  5. Visualize your goals. See the end result. Imagine how you feel. Picture buying a new wardrobe to match your smaller size. The energy that drives us to reach our goals comes from our desire to attain them. The stronger your desire, the more quickly you will achieve your goal.
  6. Evaluate your progress. Regularly review your goals. I’ve read that people who step on the scales a couple or three times a week are more likely to lose weight than those who check every week or two. Regular evaluation allows you to make changes to the steps you are taking to achieve your goals.
