5 Steps to Eliminate Time Clutter in Your Life
Sometimes we do too much and juggling time commitments plays havoc with our wellbeing. We try to work smarter, make things more streamlined. We try to do more and do it better. We say yes to extra commitments when we really want to say no. Suddenly, our calendar and to-do list are cluttered with commitments that get in the way of what we really should do.
We all have the same amount of time available to us. We have choices as to what we do with our time —though it may not always seem that way.
Here are five steps to help you assess where your time is out of control and help make your life more balanced:
1) Understand Your Relationship With Time How does your time feel right now? Is the pace of your life right for you or do you feel too pressed for time?
2) Why Do You Want or Need More Time? What three things would you like to do that you feel you don’t have the time to do right now? Why are these things important?
3) What Currently Occupies Your Time? Make a list of the regular activities and commitments that take up your time:
- Working
- Watching Television
- Childcare
- Shopping
- Paperwork
- Socializing
- Exercising
- Traveling
- Committees
- Hobbies
- Gardening
- Etc.
Highlight the top three things that take up most of your time? Circle the three things you like to do the least and put a tick by the three things you like to do the most.
4) What Can You Eliminate? What are three things that are not important to you right now you could cut from your life? Sometimes we need large cuts; sometimes just a tweak:
- Social clubs you no longer enjoy
- An extra job you agreed to do
- The clutter taking up space in your home and head
- People whose lives have gone in a different direction
- The hour in front of the television you don’t enjoy
What could you delegate?
- You partner could share more of the load
- Your children could do some chores
- Could you employ someone to do your routine tasks: housework, cleaning, filing, etc.
5) Out With the Bad In With the Good
You have assessed where you are, what you do and don’t want. You’ve eliminated the “bad” things that no longer serve you.
Now let in the “good”:
- Things that make you happy and relaxed
- Things that are important to you
- Things that make you excited
- Things that make you a nicer person to be around
- Things that let you live the life you want
- Things that make you, you!
De-clutter your life and find what really makes you happy.
