April 22 SARS Update. How does SARS spread? Respiratory droplet transmission, requiring close contact with a case of SARS, is the predominant mode of transmission. The SARS coronavirus also passes in urine and feces. Fecal-oral spread is suspected in the cluster of 300+ SARS cases from the Amoy Gardens apartments, in Hong Kong. Kristen Philipkoski writes in Wired Magazine, describing the sewage-related spread of SARS, in the Amoy Gardens cluster. Also in Hong Kong, there were cases of ‘vertical transmission’, from pregnant women to their unborn children. Blood-borne transmission may be possible – some blood banks are screening donors for SARS, including Canada, the US, and the UK. In Toronto, Canada, earlier this week, four health care workers developed SARS after working together on a presumed "super spreader" patient, at Sunnybrook hospital. The workers had used maximal precautions against infection during the intubation procedure, but were infected despite their precautions with gowns, gloves, eye shields and N-95 masks. [The Agonist]
