4 Ways to Spark Your Creativity

There are lots of people who think creativity is some sort of mysterious talent tied to genetic disposition. As a result, they’re unwilling to try anything they see as creative. Nothing could be further from the truth. Creativity is a skill that needs to be cultivated in order to be useful.

If you know someone who strikes you as “naturally” creative, it is likely they engage in the following four behaviours. It may be that these behaviours were instilled in them from a young age, or they may take deliberate steps to practice these behaviours daily.

If you take time to add these practices to your regular routine, you will quickly find your creative scope increasing.

  1. Suck it up. Creativity leads to more creativity. Take time every day to absorb new knowledge and information: read, listen and watch. Learn from the example of others. If you want to be a painter, go to museums and galleries.
  2. Don’t be a replica. The point of absorbing new knowledge and information is not to churn out copies of what has already been done. Take the experience and use it as a springboard to create something that is uniquely you.
  3. Do it daily. Photographers carry their cameras everywhere. Writers have a notebook with them at all times. You don’t have to try and create a masterpiece every time, but you should try to create all the time.
  4. Explore new territory. Always look for different things you can do, or different ways to do what you’re already doing. It’s the idea of getting outside your comfort zone. This is more than just switching from portrait to wildlife photography. It can be as simple as going to a new restaurant for supper, but more likely to be as terrifying as taking up sky-diving.

Always think beyond your “limits.” Follow these four steps and pretty soon you’ll unleash your creative thinking and making others sit up and take notice.
