One of the old-school presentation tools is the pointer. While it reaches back to academic settings and overhead projectors, it can still serve to note details on the presentation medium.
For the most part, laser pointers have replaced wooden or expandable points. A number of these tips apply, regardless of the type of pointer you are using.
- Pointers should make a quick visual reference on a pictorial chart or to trace the relationship of data on a graph. If you have bullet-point word charts, avoid the pointer and refer to each point by an item or number.
- When using a pointer, keep your shoulder oriented toward the audience. Do not cross your arm over your body to refer to something on the screen. Instead, hold the pointer in the hand closest to the screen.
- Don’t play with the pointer when not using it. Either fold it up and put it away, or put it down.
- Stand by the screen when using the point, not by the projector. Standing by the projector will often block somebody’s view of the screen.
- If you’re still using an overhead project, don’t leave the pointer on the projection surface. This will focus too much attention on the screen and detract from the speaker.
- When using a laser pointer don’t try to point with it. Instead, circle the part of the graph or drawing you want the audience to focus on. This will help avoid the trembling in your hands from showing.
