Five Tips for Finding Writing Time

A couple or so weeks ago, I decided to set fixed time for writing blog posts. While I’ve always had some kind of content schedule, getting the posts written often ended up being a hit-and-miss proposition.

I’ve picked after supper, five days per week, as my scheduled writing time. Getting into this groove, I’ve discovered three things:

  1. Having this time set for writing blog posts, I’m getting blog posts written. That may seem obvious, but when you’re trying to fit writing in, while being distracted by other things, it’s not an efficient process.
  2. Not only am I getting one blog post written, sometimes it’s two or three posts. As I dig through reference material and notes I have taken, I see the ideas for other posts. Again, the efficiency of focus leads to more being written.
  3. If something crosses my personal radar, and I’d like to post it immediately: such as this post or quick links to other material, I’m free to run with it.

  1. Identify your productivity zone
  2. When in the zone, only write
  3. How to stay focussed on writing
  4. How to accomplish more writing
  5. Reward yourself for getting writing done

    Nice tips!!

I haven’t been writing as many posts as I want to lately; I think I’m going to have to try some of your suggestions.

Hi Ian, time is what holds me back the most in writing. Focus is a good way to get the most of that precious commodity time. Emma

I’m really amazed at how productive I’ve become. There are some related habits that are helping: research, reference filing, journaling, etc.
