Band leader, trumpeter Maynard Ferguson dies

Maynard fergusonWhen I was a kid learning to play the trumpet, Maynard Ferguson was the guy I aspired to emulate. I had visions of standing on stage screeching out the kind of high notes that would shatter glass. I attended the same high school in Montreal that MF had gone to and felt somehow that the greatness was imbued in the walls and would rub off.

I’m not screeching out any high notes these days, but I’m still enjoying the music. R.I.P. Maynard Ferguson.

Big band leader and jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, who played with Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Kenton and recorded the Rocky theme song, has died at the age of 78.
