4 tips for planning your charitable giving

Posted in The Simple Life

Charitable givingHow much is enough when it comes to charitable giving: $100 per year, $200, $300, more? Most people assume, for a gift to be effective, it needs to be large. The reality is when you’re donating to charity, every little bit counts. So, while you think you might not be able to make a difference, with a little planning, you can.

Here are some things to consider when planning your charitable giving:

  1. Research – Do you prefer your donation to be used locally or would you rather support a large national program? Know where your funds are going before you make a donation.
  2. Give regularly – Charitable organizations have ongoing costs. They need a consistent income flow to manage programs and services. Many charitable organizations make it easy to donate regularly. Consider making donations part of your monthly budget.
  3. Make it efficient – Know how your money is being spent. Find out what percentage of donations are used to cover administrative costs and what percentage goes to programs and services.
  4. Follow you heart – If your mother battled breast cancer, you might find it easier to support the breast cancer foundation. Look for charities that match your passions and interests, and you will find it easier to donate.
