Purge, Purge, Purge
No matter how effective your physical system is, it will not work if it is over full. [tag]David Allen[/tag] recommends a filing cabinet be no more than three-quarters full. He says that when the cabinet gets too full, the effort required to file becomes more than most people are willing to expend.
- Schedule dates to regularly purge your files.
- Learn the record retention rules for your area and go through your files. Archive those documents you need to keep and shred the rest.
- Label archived records so you can quickly see when they need trashing.
- Regularly review your reading pile and get rid of those you have finished.
- Toss outdated reference material. Only keep that which is current.
Time spent purging your work area will help keep your systems running smoothly.
