7 ways to build strong relationships
Posted in Communication Tuesday
A strong, healthy relationship does not magically happen. Good relationships are built, one step at a time. Here are seven steps you can take to help you build stronger, authentic relationships.
- Relax – If you are comfortable around others, they will feel comfortable around you. When you meet someone for the first time, pretend you’re rediscovering a long-lost friend. A sincere smile can go a long way to making the other person feel comfortable
- Listen – Effective listening involves more than hearing words; it can create an emotional connection to the person speaking. Learn to listen effectively.
- Feel – Share in the other person’s emotional responses. Celebrate their excitement and pleasure in successful accomplishments. Support them in their losses and mistakes. Genuine empathy strengthens the bond of trust.
- Respond – Think before you speak. As you have listened and empathetically entered their mood, respond appropriately. Words have power to build or tear down trust. Make sure what you say is for the benefit of the listener and not to boost your ego.
- Cooperate – Relationships require reciprocal behaviour. You cannot take, take, take and expect the relationship to flourish. You have to give at least as much as you take, and quite possibly more. Willingness to meet someone halfway demonstrates your commitment to building the relationship.
- Act – Ensure the way you live is consistent with your values. Be honest with yourself. If you present a false appearance to others, it won’t take them long to brand you a fake. Acting with integrity creates trust and respect.
- Encourage – Look for ways to acknowledge the contributions of others. Let them know the difference they have made in your life. Express thanks for the things others do for you.
Practice these skills and turn them into lifelong habits. You will build strong, healthy relationships.
