Do You Need a Wake-Up Call to Get Motivated?

motivation wake up call alarm clockI’ve been on vacation the past couple of weeks. It’s been nice not having to set the alarm in the morning. It’s not that I’m sleeping in, but it’s nice to wake up on my terms and not at the insistence of a strident alarm. This morning, it was back to a regular schedule and setting the alarm. Setting the alarm is necessary to getting up on time. However, it’s of no benefit to me if I don’t respond to it.

All of us face wake-up calls in life; calls intended to make us aware of ourselves and our behaviour. Often, we ignore such wake-up calls as we don’t want to face ourselves or others.

You know the type: The person who has had a heart attack, yet is the first to order sour cream, cheese and bacon to top their baked potato. Perhaps it’s the alcoholic who refuses to recognize the wake-up call of the emotional pain they are experiencing. Instead they try to turn off the “alarm” by drinking more.

People rarely admit their drinking problems until they hear a wake-up call of financial ruin, legal problems or separation from spouses or children. Even then, denial may block them from hearing the call, let alone choosing to do anything about it. Turning off the alarm doesn’t stop the problem.

The best wake-up call is to look in the mirror, and take an honest personal inventory. This involves the “no excuse” and “no blame”. Denying you have a problem, minimizing the problem, or blaming others for what is your responsibility, are false defenses against acting on your wake-up call.

Responding to a wake-up call can change your life. The sooner you hear and responded to your alarm, the sooner you start to like your self and enjoy living.
