When I first started playing around with computerized mind mapping, I used an early offering from MindJet called, Smart Mind (I believe). One of the sample maps included with the software was this outline of steps to taking better notes.

I wasn’t sure about mind mapping at the time, but I wanted to keep the information from this map. I exported it as a text outline, copied it into a journal entry in Lotus Notes and it has been there for several years. From time to time, I review the outline to refresh my thoughts and process for taking notes.

I’m posting it here in its bare form, without any commentary. See if it refreshes your note-taking skills.

As you’ve pointed out through mind-mapping, organization is highly important when taking notes. Organization reduces the amount of searching through notes and notebooks to find what you need. Obviously, everyone has their own way of creating organization (separate note books, tagging pages with labels, using electronic note taking software) but it’s important to be able to find what you need quickly. Highlighting is another helpful practice in taking good notes.

Great write up, and I appreciate all the note-taking tips!
