10 Traits of a Motivator

Posted in

A hallmark of successful people is their willingness and ability to motivate others.

A positive motivator…

  1. commuicates. Listening is one of the most important skills you can have. How well you listen plays a key role in the quality of your relationships with others. If you’re going to be a motivator, you need to develop “active listening” skills. Listen to the words the other person is saying, but try and understand the total message.
  2. focuses on goals. A motivator sees the importance goals play in achieving success. When motivating others you need to help them see the importance of setting goals. You need to recognize people are different. You need to learn what drives people: observe their behaviour, speech, emotions and values.
  3. gives direction. Call others to actions. Once you have considered, discussed, and planned, it’s time for action. Assign the tasks. The effective leader has the ability to cut the problems down to size and give clear direction.
  4. is self-confident. Self-confidence is not the only secret of leadership. Confidence in other people is an essential. Leadership involves motivating others to their best efforts and channeling those efforts in a focused. direction. Leaders must believe that they can count on other people to come through. When leaders believe in other people, confidence grows, and winning becomes attainable.
  5. expect the best. “Confidence is the expectation of a positive outcome,” says Rosabeth Moss Kanter. A professor at Harvard Business School, Kanter helps translate textbook concepts about success and attitude into practical results. “The fact is,” she says, “confidence makes you willing to try harder and attracts the kind of support from others that makes ‘winning’ possible.”
  6. leads by example. You can not expect others to do what you will not do. Constantly look for heroes in your own life to admire and emulate. Adopt their styles. Then, lead by example.
  7. creates a learning environment. It’s never too soon or too late for learning. Information and knowledge is changing at an incredible rate. Those who do not continue to learn will fall behind quickly.
  8. reaches out. A leader does not retreat inward. Bring others into your world: Explain your thinking and your perspective. Tell the things that interest and motivate you. Know a little about others: Learn three non-work-related things about them, such as their family, their hobbies, their home. Look for things you have in common to talk about.
  9. values others. Encouragement goes to the heart of the individual. The word encourage comes from a combination of the prefix “en” which means “to put into” and the Latin word “cor” which means heart. Encourage others the way you want to be encouraged.
  10. rewards accomplishments. Use rewards to give others a pat on the back and encourage them to move on to the next step.
