7 Rules for a Tidy Inbox

While travelling back to Edmonton yesterday evening, my seat-mate was dealing with a congested e-mail in-box. I could empathize, as my in-box looks the same. No matter what effort, tips and tricks I apply to e-mail processing, it doesn’t take long for the situation to get out of control.

Teten and Allen researched effective systems that workers have used to tackle their inboxes. Although everyone has his or her own best way of dealing with e-mail overflow, the duo’s book outlines these seven rules for keeping your inbox under control:

1. Keep your inbox empty
2. Organize around action, not data
3. Save everything
4. Organize just enough
5. Review regularly
6. Keep your file sizes manageable
7. Filter spam
