GTD with your Blackberry

GTD with the BlackberryIsaac Bowman points out a simple implementation of GTD using a Blackberry. GTD with your Blackberry.

Both the Task and Memo applications on the Blackberry have a Find feature. When you open the apps, the Find box is at the top of the list. Start typing a keyword and your tasks or memos are filtered by the keyword.

Isaac suggests putting the context as the first word in any task. I.e., “Call Fred about next week’s training session.” Then when you’re ready to make phone calls, open the task list, type “call” in the Find box and your task list is filtered to those you have marked call.

He suggests leaving the @ symbol off of the context, as “there’s no need for it.” I would suggest using the symbol, as the Find function locates all instances of the typed letter combinations. If, in addition to the above call, I had a task, “Someday/maybe talk to Fred about his callow behaviour,” typing c-a-l-l would filter both call and callow. The @ symbol would eliminate those kinds of duplicates.

You can make use of keywords, as the Blackberry searches all words in a task or memo title. If all your tasks related to Fred have his name attached; regardless of context, the next time you’re in Fred’s office, you can enter his name in the search box and see all your commitments to Fred. Isaac expands on the concept giving some examples of how to tie projects together using keywords.

Update: In the try-before-you-blog category, the BB does not filter sysmbols, so adding the @ would have no effect. Thanks for the heads-up on that Isaac.

Hey Ian,
Did you check out the new Mentat BlackBerry Client yet?
http://gomentat.com

It has full featured task support as well as Jott support for calling in tasks, and great team project & GTD options. The Mentat BB app also stays synched to the Mentat web service, so you (or your team) can access the same up to date tasks and comments on the move or at the desk with full coordination and no double booking.

You can try it for free at gomentat.com.

I’d love to see what you think of it!
